using Ear Master School on a peer-to-peer network

Post by Tech Support »

We have recently purchased a copy of Ear Master School 5 (site license) - for use in a Music Department where the existing network is peer-to-peer (Windows XP Professional workstations). We do not have a central server to collect results to.

Is there anyway to maintain individual accounts in Ear Master - not necessarily associated with a Windows login - and to record the exercise scores of each student for a teacher to examine at a later date.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If EarMaster is configured to stand-alone mode (standard installation) then it stores all results and settings locally on the computer. It can still handle an unlimited number of users, but it is difficult for the teacher to overview the results of all students because their results are divided on may different computers.

Therefore it is much better to have a central computer where all settings and results are stored. If you don't have a dedicated server, you can just choose any of the clients in the network as the "server" for the EarMaster data. It must of course be turned on everytime any of the other computers needs to use EarMaster, but that is the only requirement.
You simply create a share on the "server" where you place the EarMaster data (see the network installation guide) and then you Map to this share on each of the other clients.

So, if we have already installed the Ear Master Software in "stand-alone" mode (not realizing the need for centralized install) . . . do we uninstall it from the local machines first, and then re-install following the Network Setup Instructions?

(It sounds like your suggestion of making one of the workstations a "pseudo-server" will work for us here.)

Thank you.

If you already installed EarMaster you can simply configure each client to use the data files in a different location (i.e. the data folder on the shared drive). You need to login with Admin rights in EarMaster and find the "Administration" window in the "Tools" menu.

Another solution is to uninstall all EarMaster installations, then make a server installation on the shared network drive and then make a client installation on each client, as described in the network installation guide.
