What's the theory behind the tutor?

Post by cobbi69 »

I've been working on melodic dictation for a while, finding it difficult, but up until now I've done my own thing. Recently I converted to the tutor and am making some progress.
However, I like to know why I am doing certain exercises and earmaster doesn't seem to explain. So can anybody tell me why the first exercise of identifying a tone within a scale after being given the cadence is benefitting me? I guess I need reassurance the the exercises are carefully chosen in a particular sequence, rather than sticking any old combination together for the sake of having a tutor.
Responses would be greatly appreciated.

The Tutor lessons have been compiled by a music theory teacher from a national conservatory here in Denmark. It corresponds to her methodology as to what each exercise should include and in which order they should appear. Of course there are about as many pedagogical approaches to ear training as there are teachers, but be sure the tutor lessons in EarMaster are following a progression that has been set up by an expert in her field. :-)
