Hi
I can`t get any question on the melodic dictation excersise correctly. How am I supposed to figure out notes out of a cadenza? Listen to the root chord and try to relate the note being played to the tonic of the scale, or what?
Help please!
Melodic dictation is too difficult....help!

I can't run during 1 hour, after ten minutes I'm exhausted, any help?
You can't get the answer with any trick, is an ability you have to develop. If you could do it right now, then you wouldn't need ear training.
Melody dictate is an advanced exercise, if you haven't mastered Interval recognition, then you shouldn't try it yet.

If you choose a tone (say C), up to the next C there are 11 tones, then you got another C. If you play those tones one after the other (first and next C included), you have the feeling that you are going up in steps. Each of this steps, has a particular sound when you hear it.
It works the same for whatever tone you choose as the first one, up to the next same tone.
The cadence, establishes wich tone is the root (the first step), and then you have to listen for the question tone and find out wich step is just by it's sound.
There is no magical way to do it, just practice over and over, until you are familiar with the sound of every step.
If you work first only with the steps of a Major Scale, it's easier than working with all crhomatic steps.

A melody is a series of intervals, so you need to learn the intervals first. Melodic dictation is a more advanced exercise, and for an untrained ear this is too advanced. You should first complete some lessons in the interval identification exercise, and then you can begin using melodic dictation.

Melodic dictation too difficult
Don't practice too long! If you feel you get exhausted after more than half an hour, stop! It will only worsen your result! Practice in reasonable amounts of time (just as long as you feel fresh and to it), and try to keep your practice time regular (every or every second day, that is very important). Also consider taking a break. Never saturate yourself by doing too long, that really isn't a way to learn anything.
