I'm in trouble T_T

Post by burger1113 »

Hey all, thanks a lot for listening in. :laugh3:
I was always pushed and expected to follow the conventional path to a job/profession that pays well, being asian and all, but I'm nothing but someone who can do that. And after being accepted to a decent university, I was finally at a position where I could say screw this, and I did. I quit school.
What I've been really aiming toward's been music all along, Jazz, especially, but now that I'm pointing the right way, I have no background whatsoever in music. I've played saxophone all my highschool years and my first year university, and I'm good enough technique-wise to get into some school, but my theory and ear training is just... atrocious.
Alright, I DID constantly improve myself in that aspect, but without a full commitment, people were neither willing nor prepared to help me out(which is what I figure.. after all the desperate questions for help).
The problem is, for example, I sometimes can't distinguish major. 3rd perf. 5th. Yeah, that's right. That bad. I've caught on some theory recently, but that's kind of stuck, as I find this "Modern music school theory text vol.1" by Phil Rizzo pretty informative, but too difficult.

It's now looking almost like I'm never going to get further than some point in my career, as I'm 21 years old without any of my feet in the business, and it's partly true, I know. But I'm literally nothing without music. Even if I end up not becoming a performing artist, but in a music associated business instead, first things first, I intend to build a base of support in jazz music. So please help me out if you have any suggestions.
Again, I appreciate you all for reading this much.

P.S. I feel like I've wrote something without much backbone... I do have a fever I can't seem to shake off.. I should have wrote down some points before I started, I suppose :-|

Music is foremost about giving something to others and enjoying what you play. A good ear and solid theoretical skills are important of course, but you must not forget that pleasure is what really counts.
There are millions of musicians out there, and probably only a tiny procent of them is making a carreer out of their performances.

Like you mention, there are other ways to combine professional life and music: associations, magazines, music schools, manufacturers, etc. Success as a performing artist can still happen along the way ;-)
