Hi,I'm a beginner and HELP Needed!

Post by Harmonica »

Greetings!
I'm just a newcomer,
now I'm dealing with the Interval Comparison.
and I suppose I need some help on this----
that is,is there any special method to the listening?
I mean,is there a series of pratical skills which will help doing the comparison?
In fact,I've been doing quite smoothly until Lesson15(standard tutor),
the harmonic without a common tone.
I found it quite difficult for me,and my score is not steady.
So I'd like to ask how can I do better.
Anyone can offer help?
Thanks~~

Hi,
Try to assign an "idea" or "feeling" to each interval in the previous exerises.
For example, minor second sounds grim and chilly, minor third is enigmatic and so on...
I don't know if you can use that technique but it helps me :--D

Hi,Quentin.
Yes,that's it.
I mean in fact,I've been trying to "recognize" the intervals in this way,
and I usually use my piano to get the feeling little by little.
But it's strange that when I do that with my piano,
I can sense the difference between the intervals(major 2nd/minor 2nd),
but when I listen to Earmaster, the "feeling" is gone
and sometimes I make wrong choices all the way~~~

Perhaps I need more practice. :--D

I feel that earmaster isn't the right way to start learning your intervals. First, sit down at your piano and play the interval you want to learn. Then play it again, starting on a different note. Then again. Sing it as you go along. When you get a pretty good feel for it, then start testing yourself using earmaster. Don't move on to new intervals until you've pretty much nailed the previous one, and use custom exercises to maintain your ear.

Please let me know how to use the ear master. I am able to do interval comparison upto lesson - 13. But I am not finding any change. We have to practice it daily right?

The first lessons of Interval Comparison are for beginners. From lesson 14 on, the intervals don't have the same reference, so it gets harder. In case you fail lesson 14 with a very low percentage, I guess you should try to take the first 13 lessons again to fine-tune your perception of the different intervals.
