melodic dictation technique

what is the best technique in melodic dictation? To answer 4 or more tones, do I have listen to them as a string of notes or think of them as seperate notes and determine their intervals to answer?

Hi Quentin!
I am referring to the piano display below the staff. I use midi to play answer not clicking it on the staff. I tried the guitar display and they have the same problem.
